We all know that things aren’t always what they seem. On the surface the world of Disney seems like the idyllic place where dreams actually come true, especially if you wish upon a star (makes no difference who you are). Though the unfortunate reality of the Disney empire is that it is a money-making business that charges exorbitant amounts of money for people to enter their theme parks. And well, we have all heard the stories from friends (or friends of friends) who worked for Disney. Let’s just put it this way — not all dreams come true in the Disney empire.
Now that we have gotten our Disney-bias out of the way. Let’s discuss something happening with Disney and identity theft. The Walt Disney Co. was sued in federal court in Santa Ana today in a class action lawsuit that alleges the company-issued employee badges that left workers vulnerable to identity theft. The employees allege that Disney violated state law regarding privacy rights because the bar code contained on employee badges contains Social Security numbers that could easily be swiped by smart phone applications.
Our faithful readers may remember that this is not the first time the Disney empire has been covered on the ITAC blog. Last fall, we did a story about a rogue Disney employee who stole company secrets to buy designer bags and shoes. What is up with all the criminals using their ill-gained funds to buy designer stuff by the way?
Well, we hope that Disney did not violate their employees privacy by making their social security numbers so easy to attain. The reality is that with all the new smart phone apps, employers really need to ensure that employee data cannot be compromised via these means.
And, let’s hope that Disney is not just wishing upon a star, but will actually making this right and taking steps to ensure their employees privacy.
